The Sun

Let us first begin with the sun. Our sun is a massive ball made up of 74% hydrogen and 24% helium. Nevertheless, it also contains other few elements. Our sun has so much mass that the centre of the sun can ignite fusion.

In every star, the centre is where the work occurs. Atoms of hydrogen are fused into atoms of helium which causes vast amounts of energy to be released into space.

On the other hand, planets are also made of similar elements just like the sun. Planets such as Saturn and Jupiter are gas giants which have far more hydrogen and helium. Yet, these planets cannot ignite fusion and the reason why is because of mass. All the planets in the universe don’t have enough mass to ignite fusion at their centre. Out of all planets in our solar system, Jupiter has the most mass with as much as 300 times more mass than Earth. If Jupiter had 80 times more mass than at present, it could have ignited fusion at the core, making it star. However, scientists have said that if Jupiter had more mass, it would begin to shrink.

Planets

Planets are different to stars. Although stars emit light, planets only reflect light. Another difference between planets and stars is that stars stay in one position all their life emitting light whereas planets only reflect light and orbit their stars in a cycle. For example, planet Earth completes an orbit around the Sun once every 365 days. The orbit for every planet would be different depending on how further away the planet is from the Sun.

In the past, planets have caused debates. Thousands of objects have been discovered in the night sky regarding planets, stars and asteroids. Pluto was once thought to have been a planet but now it is considered an unknown celestial body in space.
